Crisis & Opportunity: Progressive State Policy in an Economic Downturn & the Obama Era
Monday, July 20th • 1pm-6:30pm • Philadelphia, PA
On Monday, July 20th -- the day before the National Conference of State Legislature's Legislative Summit officially begins -- Progressive States Network will be hosting an afternoon event and reception for progressive legislators and organization allies.
Amidst the current landscape of economic crises and hardship in our communities, there are also opportunities for advancing progressive state policies in the Obama era. Join Progressive States Network, allies and forward-thinking legislators for an exploration of the opportunities for promoting transparency and equity in the states through the federal recovery plan as well as opportunities and strategies for state-federal collaboration. Hear from the advocates of the progressive movement -- state and national organizations from around the country working on a wide range of issues -- and learn about their policy goals for 2010 and how they can support the work of state legislators.
The event will take place on the 10th Floor at the Hilton Garden Inn Philadelphia Center City located adjacent to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the site of the NCSL Legislative Summit, at 1100 Arch Street.
The afternoon will consist of the following important, timely sessions:
This session will address how states can best implement the federal recovery plan in the coming session, with a focus on ensuring transparency and equity in the distribution of recovery funds. We will discuss the successes of the recovery plan in reviving state economies, while highlighting where and how improvements can be made to assure maximum help for those most in need and where funding can have the largest economic impact.
With a new Administration and Congress in Washington DC, the opportunity to actively collaborate between the states and the federal government are great. Hear from White House officials and advocates about how both levels of government can work together and learn from recent campaigns that have promoted progressive policies through state-federal collaboration.
Around the country, in every issue area, advocates are working to advance the progressive agenda in the states. This is a great opportunity to hear from a wide range of progressive organizations who work on state policy as they each share a brief snapshot of their organizations, their policy goals for 2010, and how they can work with you. (If you would like your progressive organization to make a presentation, please contact Marisol Thomer ASAP at 212-680-3116 x108 or mthomer@progressivestates.org.)
